“This is an amazing find! An Indian restaurant that has OUTSTANDING food, service and serious allergy protocols. I personally know the owner and she has a severe seafood allergy, so they can handle any allergy. They also make everything from scratch and have separate pans for the few nut dishes that are on their menu. Finally, an Indian restaurant my peanut and tree nut-allergic daughter can eat at!”

Everest MoMo
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
“Delicious Nepali-Indian food truck and completely nut-free! We never eat Indian food with our nut-allergic kiddo unless we’re cooking it ourselves because it’s usually so unsafe. One of the owners/chefs has a peanut allergy himself, so they were extremely knowledgeable about nut allergies. Our group tried the samosas, the MoMo dumplings and the Tikka Masala—excellent!”

Pakwan Restaurant – Tenderloin
Location: San Francisco, California
“Indian restaurants are always great for vegan or vegetarian options. This one can get pretty busy, but the food tastes amazing and comes in large quantities. (Note that some of the biryanis have cashews but you can ask them to confirm and they’re very helpful).”

Noori Pakistani & Indian Cuisine
Location: San Francisco, California
“Noori has been my favorite Indian restaurant in San Francisco for years, and after my daughter developed tree nut, egg, and sesame allergies (and dairy intolerance), I thought I’d never be able to eat out for Indian again.
And then my husband went back one day when she was at daycare, just to find that their menu is actually EXTREMELY well labeled and they are actually entirely nut-free!! They menu labels things vegan and tree nut free very clearly, and they only use sesame seeds on one type of naan. I honestly cried I was so happy.
It is now our go-to place for eating with friends and I was speaking with the owner who was describing how her friend’s kids had severe allergies so she had worked to make the menu more accessible to them. I also learned that while Indian cuisine is very cashew based, Pakistani food does not use cashew as a base, which is another reason their menu can be nut-free!”

Florida
Yak & Yeti Restaurant
Location: Orlando, Florida
“This restaurant is entirely tree nut-free and also great with other food allergies (my brother is allergic to chicken and turkey). My family was initially hesitant to eat there because of our wariness around cross-contamination risk at Asian and Indian restaurants (though I personally love Asian cuisine when I can have it), so it’s so nice to find a place where I can enjoy some of my favorite foods restaurant-style. This has since become one of our favorite restaurants in the parks! The vegetarian stir-fry is delicious.”

“Ate here with my 1.5 year old and we loved the food. I asked the waiter if there was egg or seafood in the dishes we wanted and he informed us that there are no eggs at all in the kitchen. My son had saag chicken and plain naan, gobbled it up (and got a bunch on his face) with no reactions.”

Arya Bhavan
Location: Chicago, Illinois
“Small family owned Indian and all vegan restaurant on Devon St. in Chicago. The owner is usually always present and is very accommodating to allergies including nuts which is difficult to find in Indian restaurants. My son especially enjoyed the naan with dal (lentils) and loved drinking fresh coconut water straight out of the coconut!”

Kama Bistro
Location: La Grange, Illinois
“Kama serves amazing Indian food in downtown La Grange! They said stay away from desserts and 2 of the dishes (I don’t remember the names) when I asked about nuts but everything else is ok! All the sauces are made to order so there’s never any food sitting around in the kitchen and they always use fresh pots and pans! It seemed like they took allergies seriously.”

Art of Dosa
Location: Chicago, Illinois
“Nut-free Indian?? As an Indian person, it was saddened to think I could never take my son to an Indian restaurant. But Art or Dosa takes steps to be a 100% nut and dairy-free kitchen. It is so liberating to be totally free of worry when dining out.
And their dosas and other food items are incredibly tasty to boot!”

Kentucky
Shalimar Indian Restaurant
Location: Louisville, Kentucky
“They have plenty of options since a lot of Indian food is naturally gluten-free. The waiter told me that the only dishes made with wheat are those made with spinach or naan bread. Just to be on the safe side, I avoided anything else that seemed like it might contain wheat, such as anything battered and fried. I tend to be a little paranoid because there’s been times (at other restaurants) where the staff say something is gluten free, but then double check for me and find out it’s not. I ended up having the tikki masala and didn’t get sick.”

New Jersey
Nirvana Indian Kitchen
Location: Allendale, New Jersey
“I love love Indian food and feel safe eating here! The owner is often on the floor and when you tell them you have an allergy he is usually the one to take the order! Because there is a vegan section on the menu I tend to order off of that because it doesn’t have dairy normally and they don’t have to make changes to the traditional dish! Food takes a while but because they make the dishes fresh and allergy safe for me! Favorite dishes include masala dosa and chana masala!”

“This vegetarian restaurant with many vegan options was able to accommodate my child’s allergies to milk, egg, peanut, sesame, cashew, and pistachio. We emailed the restaurant before ordering and they were able to clearly describe their menu and what dishes do and don’t contain our allergens. Specifically, the restaurant was egg-free! And at the time the only use of nuts was in dessert. We enjoyed the creamy vegan tikka masala and the garlic naan.”

“DELICIOUS Indian food with a lot of gluten-free options! I got tandoori chicken and they happily replaced the side of naan with a side of rice. A lot of the menu is marked and a lot of options are naturally gluten0free. The chilly paneer appetizer is a must try! Hefty portions that are easy to turn into 2 meals.”

“Online menu is labeled if a food has nuts and if it’s dairy and/or gluten free. Very few items have nuts listed. No space to specify food allergies online so I called them to order pickup. I specified I had an allergy and when I went to pickup the waiter said he double-checked with the chef to make sure the food was safe. Super tasty!”

“I’m always hesitant to eat out at Indian restaurants, simply due to the ample prevalence of nuts used in the dishes. However, I informed the staff about my allergies and they confidently stated which dishes I could eat. I was able to safely enjoy the meal and appreciated their transparency when it came to accommodation of my allergies. I had samosas for the appetizer and had egg-free naan and chickpea curry for the main. The food was delicious and so flavorful!”

Jal Mahal
Location: Jaipur, India
“Very nice restaurant in Jaipur India! The server was very helpful and they have many vegan and vegetarian options, which although I’m not vegan or veg, I find it helpful that they understand dietary restrictions! I didn’t have to worry about dairy at least! Very yummy food. On the pricey side and this was by far the most expensive place I went to in India, but it was worth it! (Indian food is my favorite!) I recommend learning about some Indian dishes before you go, just so you’re familiar with the terms.”

“Some of the best Indian food I have ever had! They put a modern twist on traditional dishes/ingredients and are very clear about all allergens. I did the vegetarian tasting menu and they were able to make it completely egg and gluten free. They had gluten-free naan and allergy friendly alternatives for every component. Highly recommend! Definitely deserving of their rating as best restaurant in New Delhi.”

Nandini Parlour
Location: Bengaluru, India
“We have always found it difficult to buy Indian style sweets/desserts that may be safe for our daughter with allergies since most confectioners stores do not have allergens marked reliably. Nandini Milk Parlor has many packaged milk sweets with clear ingredient list and the manufactured date, so we felt safe giving them to our daughter. Our daughter enjoyed the Pedas, Mysore pak, orange chocolate bar, black current milk chocolate bar etc.”

We ordered the chicken tikka, hara bara kabab, potato and tomato curry with Jeera rice and butter naan for my son. He was also able to eat malai kulfi for dessert which was delicious and nut free! We also tried other Indian food that had nuts for other family members but the restaurant was very accommodating! Will definitely visit again!”

Singapore
Ananda Bhavan Restaurant (Vegetarian)
Location: Singapore
“While I didn’t get a chance to eat here on this trip, they were one of the few restaurants/stalls who promptly and in great detail, answered my questions about allergies. They seemed very aware. I’ve copy/pasted their response below for anyone interested:
‘ABR uses a variety of nuts and nut-based ingredients in some of our foods. And all our food is prepared in a kitchen where nuts are used for nuts-based dishes and recipes.
Our main dishes Idly, Plain Thosai, Onion Thosai when served with Sambar only and Appam served with Coconut milk and sugar or Sothi do not include nuts.
Our accompaniments Chutneys, Thoviyal and Potato masala which are served with Idly and Thosais are not recommended as sometimes we serve peanut chutney together with Thoviyal. Cashews are sometimes added to Potato masala so as to avoid masala in Thosais, specially Maharaja Masala.
As our South Indian Lunch menu changes regularly, so we cannot confirm that there are no nuts. The exception may be Pulli Gravy or Rasam.
For special catering events, we can prepare nut-free dishes.
We urge customers with food allergies to please exercise caution in eating foods as advised by your medical advisors.'”

Dishoom King’s Cross
Location: London, United Kingdom
“Everyone’s favorite Indian restaurant in London. There are several and they are all THE BEST. They have an allergy menu and it lists all allergens present in the dishes and those that ‘may contain’. The ‘may contain’ (we were told) means it has an ingredient that is processed outside the restaurant (i.e. the spices they use). We ordered many items none of which had nuts but they did use the spices. The waitstaff (like most in London) were very educated on allergies. Even the bartender was well informed of any allergens present in their cocktails.”
